Heading downtown brings you to Talbot Street with its unique shops, art galleries and antique stores. There’s a winery, a brewery, coffee shops and ice cream parlors. St. Michaels is home to two museums. The renowned Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, on an 18-acre waterfront campus, features the historic Hooper Strait Lighthouse and many other inter-active exhibits telling the ‘stories of the Bay.’ The St. Michaels Museum at St. Mary’s Square shares with its visitors the rich history of life in St. Michaels in the mid 1800s.
If you would like to get out on the water, there are many choices available. From St. Michaels harbor, climb aboard the Patriot for narrated cruises of the Miles River, or Selina II for an intimate sail aboard a vintage catboat. Venturing out to Tilghman Island you will find a National Historic Landmark vessel, the skipjack Rebecca T. Ruark. Take a short ride across the Tred Avon River aboard the Oxford Bellevue Ferry to the quaint village of Oxford, one of the oldest towns in Maryland.
Of course you will want to eat while you are here – you don’t want to miss the bounty of local specialties. Dining choices offer everything from hard crabs and beer to upscale sophisticated menus. There are waterfront restaurants, street side cafes, a saloon and a street cart. Talbot County is centrally located on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. The heart of Talbot County is Easton, MD, voted the 8th Best Small Town in America, and only 15 minutes from St. Michaels. It is the arts and cultural center of the area, with the historic Avalon Theater and the Academy Art Museum showcasing local and national talent. There are numerous art galleries, wonderful shops, and superb dining opportunities in Easton and surrounding areas. Another local treasure is the Farmer’s Markets. They can be found in St. Michaels, Easton and Oxford almost all year round.
